Libertia peregrinans - New Zealand Iris (Mikoikoi)

DESCRIPTION & SIZE GUIDE

Libertia peregrinans, or Mikoikoi, is a striking New Zealand iris notable for its stiff, orange-bronze foliage that provides year-round colour contrast in gardens. It forms clumps 30 - 50 cm tall and spreads slowly by rhizomes, making it ideal for mass planting, edging, or as a textural feature among rocks and flaxes. In spring, it produces delicate white, star-shaped flowers above the foliage, followed by seed capsules that extend seasonal interest. For coverage, plant 40 - 50 cm apart in groups or drifts.

  • ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT

This species supports biodiversity by providing habitat structure for invertebrates and ground-dwelling fauna. Its flowers attract insects, including native pollinators, while the seed capsules provide food resources in naturalistic plantings. As a hardy, resilient groundcover, it also helps with soil protection and erosion control, especially on slopes or open sites.

  • GROWING CONDITIONS & CARE

Libertia peregrinans grows best in full sun to light shade and tolerates a range of soils, though it prefers moist, well-drained conditions. It is hardy to frost, wind, and coastal exposure, making it versatile in gardens across New Zealand. Once established, it requires minimal care, though trimming old foliage in late winter will refresh its vibrant appearance.
