Festuca actae - Banks Peninsula Blue Tussock
DESCRIPTION & SIZE GUIDE
Festuca actae is a fine-textured blue-grey tussock growing 30 - 50 cm tall. Its clumping form adds contrast and texture in rock gardens, dry slopes, or naturalistic plantings. Space 40 - 60 cm apart for mass coverage. Its compact form and unique colouration make it an attractive alternative to exotic grasses.
ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT
Provides habitat for insects and small lizards, while its dense roots stabilise soils on slopes and coastal areas. By replacing exotic grasses with this native tussock, gardeners support local biodiversity and contribute to the restoration of authentic New Zealand dryland habitats.
GROWING CONDITIONS & CARE
Thrives in full sun with free-draining soils, tolerates frost and drought, and prefers low-nutrient conditions similar to its natural habitats. Ideal for coastal, rockery, or dry, low-maintenance garden areas. Occasional trimming of older leaves keeps clumps tidy.
