Pseudopanax lessonii - Five Finger
DESCRIPTION & SIZE GUIDE
Five Finger, Pseudopanax lessonii, is a striking evergreen tree reaching 6 - 10 metres tall with a rounded canopy. Its distinctive, glossy, finger-like leaves provide bold architectural form. It produces clusters of small flowers followed by black berries, adding seasonal interest. Ideal for specimen planting or as part of mixed native gardens, allow 4 - 5 metres spacing between trees. Its medium growth rate and sculptural foliage make it a focal point in residential and public landscapes.
ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT
Five Finger offers nectar to native insects and food for kererū and other birds. Its canopy provides shelter for birds and small invertebrates, contributing to biodiversity. Planting Pseudopanax lessonii helps strengthen ecological networks in urban and suburban gardens while maintaining a visually dramatic presence.
GROWING CONDITIONS & CARE
Grows best in full sun to semi-shaded sites with well-drained soils. Tolerates wind, coastal exposure, and moderate frost once established. Low-maintenance, slow to medium-growing, and resilient. Ideal for West Auckland gardens, coastal plantings, and restoration projects.
