Sophora chathamica - Chatham Island Kowhai
DESCRIPTION & SIZE GUIDE
Sophora chathamica, commonly known as the Chatham Island kōwhai, is one of New Zealand’s most admired small trees. It typically grows to around 6 - 10 metres tall with a 3 - 6 metre spread, making it ideal as a specimen tree in medium to large gardens. The lush green foliage is semi-evergreen and more persistent than other kōwhai species, ensuring year-round coverage. In early spring, trees burst into profusions of golden-yellow flowers, creating a spectacular seasonal display. This species is fast-growing and relatively compact, suiting both residential gardens and public landscapes. For planting, space trees at least 4 - 5 metres apart when used in groups or avenues, allowing room for their rounded canopy to develop.
ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT
The Chatham Island kōwhai is an important ecological species, highly valued for attracting native birds and pollinators. Its nectar-rich flowers are a magnet for tūī, bellbirds, and kererū, while also supporting native bees and insects during early spring. By planting kōwhai, you help restore natural food sources for wildlife at a critical time of year when other blossoms are scarce. Its dense foliage offers habitat and shelter, while the tree’s nitrogen-fixing roots improve soil health. Choosing Sophora chathamica strengthens biodiversity and contributes to healthier urban and rural ecosystems, making it both a stunning ornamental and a practical contributor to New Zealand’s environment.
GROWING CONDITIONS & CARE
Sophora chathamica thrives in full sun and tolerates a wide range of soils, provided they are well-drained. It is particularly resilient in coastal and windy sites, making it well-suited to West Auckland and other exposed regions. While drought-tolerant once established, young plants benefit from regular watering and mulching to encourage strong root development. This species grows quickly under the right conditions and can handle light frost. Pruning is rarely needed but can be done to shape young trees. Given its combination of beauty, toughness, and ecological value, the Chatham Island kōwhai is a top choice for both home gardens and landscape projects across New Zealand.
