Metrosideros collina 'Tahiti' - Dwarf Pōhutukawa
DESCRIPTION & SIZE GUIDE
Metrosideros collina ‘Tahiti’, or Dwarf Pōhutukawa, is a compact, bushy evergreen shrub growing 1 - 2 metres tall and wide. Its rounded form features glossy green leaves with silvery undersides and brilliant orange-red flowers in spring through summer. Space 1 - 1.5 metres apart for borders, mass planting, or low hedges. This cultivar provides the beauty of Pōhutukawa in a smaller, garden-friendly size, ideal for coastal, urban, or container settings.
ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT
Flowers attract tūī, bees, and native pollinators, providing valuable nectar through late spring and summer. Its dense foliage offers cover for small birds and invertebrates. As a compact native shrub, it brings biodiversity and colour into smaller gardens or urban spaces where large trees are unsuitable, supporting the same ecological functions as larger Metrosideros species.
GROWING CONDITIONS & CARE
Prefers full sun and well-draining soils. Highly tolerant of coastal exposure, salt, and wind, and moderately drought-resistant once established. Protect from heavy frost in inland areas. Requires little maintenance - light pruning after flowering maintains shape and encourages dense, vibrant growth. Perfect for coastal gardens, mixed native borders, or as a feature in urban landscapes.
