Dodonaea viscosa - Ake Ake
DESCRIPTION & SIZE GUIDE
Ake Ake, or Dodonaea viscosa, is an evergreen shrub or small tree growing 2 - 6 metres tall with leathery, lance-shaped leaves and reddish stems. Small flowers give way to winged seed capsules, providing year-round visual interest. Its upright, dense form is ideal for hedges, screens, or specimen planting in native landscapes. Space 50 - 100 cm apart for hedges, 2 - 3 metres apart for shrubs, or more for trees.
ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT
Ake Ake provides nectar for native insects and berries for birds. Its dense structure offers shelter and nesting sites, while its deep roots stabilise soils, particularly on coastal and exposed sites. By planting Dodonaea viscosa, gardeners enhance ecological connectivity and contribute to the restoration of native habitats in gardens and larger landscapes.
GROWING CONDITIONS & CARE
Thrives in full sun to partial shade and is tolerant of a wide range of soils, including sandy and rocky substrates. Highly drought- and wind-tolerant, and tolerant of coastal exposure. Minimal maintenance is needed; occasional pruning maintains shape and encourages bushiness. Adaptable and resilient, making it suitable for a range of New Zealand garden conditions.
