Corokia x virgata ‘Frosted Chocolate’

DESCRIPTION & SIZE GUIDE

Corokia ‘Frosted Chocolate’ is an evergreen shrub growing 1.5 - 2 metres tall with chocolate-brown foliage dusted with silver highlights. Small yellow flowers appear in spring, followed by red berries in autumn. Its dense, compact form is ideal for hedges, screens, or feature plantings. Space 60 - 80 cm apart for coverage or in massed plantings. Its dramatic foliage creates year-round visual interest and a sculptural effect in gardens.

  • ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT

Flowers provide nectar for native insects, while berries feed birds such as kererū and silvereyes. Dense foliage offers shelter and nesting habitat for small birds and invertebrates. By choosing native Corokia over exotic shrubs, gardeners support biodiversity and wildlife in designed landscapes while maintaining visual impact.

  • GROWING CONDITIONS & CARE

Thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-draining soils. Extremely tolerant of wind, drought, and coastal exposure. Light pruning maintains shape and encourages denser growth. Once established, it is low-maintenance, resilient, and highly suitable for hedges, screens, or specimen plantings in a variety of New Zealand gardens.
