Alectryon excelsus - Tītoki

DESCRIPTION & SIZE GUIDE

Alectryon excelsus, known as tītoki, is an attractive medium-sized native tree often used in landscaping for its glossy foliage and graceful form. It typically grows 5 - 10 metres tall with a rounded, spreading canopy. The leaves are pinnate, adding texture and depth to plantings. While its small flowers are not showy, the striking red fruit with a contrasting black seed provides seasonal interest. For gardens or landscape plantings, allow 4 - 6 metres spacing to accommodate its mature canopy.

  • ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT

Tītoki fruit is a valued food source for kererū, tūī, and other native birds. Its dense canopy provides shelter for smaller birds and insects, while its deep root system contributes to soil stability. As a long-lived, resilient tree, it plays a role in restoring natural diversity and offers both ornamental and ecological benefits in urban and rural plantings.
  • GROWING CONDITIONS & CARE

Tītoki prefers fertile, free-draining soils and grows best in sheltered, sunny to semi-shaded positions. It is tolerant of drought once established but can be frost-tender when young, so protection in the early years is recommended in cooler climates. It responds well to mulching and occasional watering during dry summers. With time, it forms a handsome, low-maintenance shade tree ideal for parks, gardens, and avenues.
