Metrosideros excelsa - Pōhutukawa

DESCRIPTION & SIZE GUIDE

The iconic Metrosideros excelsa, known as Pōhutukawa or the New Zealand Christmas Tree, is a large coastal evergreen reaching up to 20 metres tall and spreading 10 - 15 metres wide when mature. It forms a broad, spreading crown with grey-green leathery leaves and masses of crimson flower clusters in early summer. Suitable for large gardens, parks, or coastal shelterbelts, Pōhutukawa can also be pruned or trimmed for smaller sites. Space 5 - 10 metres apart, depending on final use and canopy size.

  • ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT

A cornerstone of coastal ecosystems, Pōhutukawa supports nectar-feeding birds like tūī and bellbirds, as well as bees and native insects. Its dense canopy provides nesting habitat for birds and lizards, while the extensive root systems stabilise coastal soils and cliffs. Planting Pōhutukawa helps restore native coastal habitats, countering the decline of old stands affected by Myrtle rust and past deforestation.

  • GROWING CONDITIONS & CARE

Thrives in full sun and well-draining soils, especially in coastal regions. Highly tolerant of salt spray, wind, and drought once established, though frost protection is essential when young. Avoid overly wet or heavy soils. Best suited for coastal and lowland gardens, large landscapes, or public plantings where its iconic form can be fully appreciated.
