Festuca novae-zelandiae - New Zealand Brown Tussock

DESCRIPTION & SIZE GUIDE

Festuca novae-zelandiae is a clump-forming, fine-textured tussock growing 40 - 60 cm tall with golden-brown foliage. Its arching form provides movement and seasonal colour in naturalistic or contemporary gardens. Ideal for mass plantings, erosion control, or as a feature grass, space 40 - 60 cm apart to allow clumps to establish. Its low-maintenance habit and architectural form make it a standout native grass alternative to exotic tussocks.

  • ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT

Supports insects and invertebrates and provides ground-level shelter for lizards. Its dense root system stabilises soils on slopes and dry landscapes, contributing to erosion control. By replacing exotic grasses with native tussocks, gardeners encourage biodiversity and ecosystem resilience while maintaining aesthetic appeal.

  • GROWING CONDITIONS & CARE

Prefers full sun with well-draining soils. Frost- and drought-tolerant once established. Performs well in coastal and exposed sites, as well as dry gardens and low-maintenance landscapes. Occasional trimming of dead leaves refreshes clumps. Excellent for naturalistic plantings, urban gardens, or restoration projects.
