Asplenium bulbiferum - Hen and Chicken Fern (Mouku)

DESCRIPTION & SIZE GUIDE

Asplenium bulbiferum, commonly called Hen and Chicken Fern or mouku or pikopiko, is one of New Zealand’s most loved native ferns. It grows 60 - 120 cm tall with arching fronds that are finely divided, creating a soft, lush appearance. Its name comes from the small plantlets (“chickens”) that grow on the parent fronds, which can root when they touch soil. Perfect for shaded gardens, containers, or as underplanting beneath trees, it adds lush greenery and texture to any planting scheme. For coverage, space plants 60 -  80 cm apart.

  • ECOLOGICAL BENEFIT

Hen and Chicken Fern contributes to the health of shaded ecosystems by providing moist habitat for insects and invertebrates. Its dense fronds create cover for lizards and help support ground biodiversity in native gardens. By choosing this fern over exotic species, you support New Zealand’s natural heritage while bringing authentic texture and softness to shaded garden areas.

  • GROWING CONDITIONS & CARE

This fern thrives in partial to full shade and requires moist, humus-rich soils. It prefers consistently damp conditions and benefits from mulching to retain soil moisture. Protect from harsh sun and drying winds, as fronds can scorch or brown. While it tolerates light frost, it thrives best in sheltered environments such as West Auckland’s shaded gardens and bush edges. Regular watering during dry spells ensures year-round lushness.
